API 5L can be both seamless and welded steel pipeline. This is the steel type that is commonly used for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The API 5L is best for transporting gas, water, and oil. The size range can be limited and will only depend on the manufacturer’s production capabilities.
The API 5L specifications should comply with the International Organization for Standardization ISO 3183. This standardizes the pipeline transportation systems depending on the materials used, equipment, and offshore structures for petroleum, petrochemical, as well as natural gas industries.
API 5L Applications
The API 5L has a different application in different industries. However, this a common material used in oil and gas transmission pipes. It is also used in the petroleum and natural gas industries as well as the low and medium pressure pipeline systems. The API 5L is also used in Sour services and Nace pipe anti-corrosion for HS2 environments. Aside from all these, it is also used as Onshore and Offshore Pipelines.
The Different Product Specification Levels
The technical committee who are tasked to authorize the standards has recognized two basic Product Specifical Levels (PSL) of the technical requirements. This was when PSL1 and PSL2Â were developed. PSL 1 is the standard quality of the line pipe, whereas, PSL 2 will contain additional chemical and/or mechanical properties as well as testing requirements.
The Difference Between the PSL1 and PSL2 Pipes
As mentioned above, these two types are very different from each other. These pipes are used in different environments like corrosive or non-corrosive. The pipes used for the corrosive environment would need to be made of such materials that can withstand the process condition. While on the normal services, the standard quality level pipe will be sufficient.
So what are the differences between the PSL1 and the PSL2? These two types differ in chemical properties like the carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur. For the mechanical properties, the PSL2 pipes have limited Maximum Yield and Ultimate Tensile Strength, while the PSL1 pipe, the minimum requirements are okay.
There is also a difference in the manufacturing process. The inspection and repair are also different. The non-destructive inspection for PSL2 is mandatory, while it is a supplementary requirement for a PSL1. The repair of the pipe body plate and skelp are not allowed in PSL 2, and a different case in PSL1. The certification and traceability are also checked because of the PSL1, Traceability & Certification are not required, but with PSL2 pipes, these are mandatory.
The Welded Line Pipe. As mentioned above, the welded pipeline is one of the types of API 5L. This type is commonly used in petroleum and natural gas industries. This pipe is also used as a pipeline transportation systems.
